Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Self checkout

Anyone else tired of the customer complaints and theft through self checkout?

What a mess. Just like the steal and go program, they should call this the “help yourself to free merchandise” program.

Also, if you want to see customers just walk out and leave big sales behind, just have a mom come in and try to to a big shop with the kids. Self checkouts have no space for you to empty a big cart full of product and bag the merchandise. Not to mention having to try to corral a kid at the same time. Moms will leave that whole basket and walk out. Or, they’ll endure it....once. But then they will leave and not do their monthly big shop here anymore.

And before you say they can do online grocery pickup, that only works for part of the store. The full selection isn’t online and if you need pretty much anything that isn’t grocery, you still have to go in the store. That isn’t convenient.

Self checkout is a nightmare for moms with kids or people doing big shops. And online grocery pickup doesn’t completely solve that problem. Self checkout also encourages shrink.

If I were Walmart’s competitor, I would literally be advertising the fact that I still provide customer service and have a real person to help them check out.

All our competitors have to do is have better meat/produce than us and have cashiers staffed and trained to smile and say thank you. If their prices are within 10% of Walmart, the customers would pay for the service.

I had never used the self checkout g-n before, used it on diapers and it didn’t go through but worked on my other items. They tried to charge me with theft. I went back and happily paid for it.

No cashiers this is what the future will be, There are alternatives. Robots do not eat or sleep, or require wages and benefits. Other stores have tellers and low prices.
What other chains do not have is an entire family of multi -billionaires . So we should stop shoping at Walmart . Get them where it hurts in there wallet.

I just left my shopping cart. I'm tired of spending $600+ in a store that doesn't even have 1 cashier available. I usually go thru the whole process at self checkouts. But today I had only change to spend. So needless to say my $20 worth of food got left. The checkouts only have card sales. 1 avl that takes change. Can't even get employees here to say hi, let alone help you when reaching for a product on top shelf's. I have Parkinsons so needless to say I can't reach things good. Thank goodness for other customers who are willing to help. I will be taking my $600+ to my local store for now on

Big Lake Minnesota.. WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE!!

At about 7pm there are three cashiers which stopped ringing up customers orders and three additional heavily re--rded individuals wearing yellow vests with either thier hands in their pockets or fingers up their (AHEM), nose, watching the clientele about 15 to 20 patrons do all of the employees tasks for them. Ok soo let's look at this a little closer. (Six) employees to 15 to 20 patrons is about 3 orders per employee but THEY CAN NOT, AND OR WILL NOT WORK! Instead, they watch you, the customer that is paying for the merchandise do thuer job for them. PATHETIC!! I AM NOT EMPLOYED BY WAL MART! I AM NOT A CASHIER NOR AM I PAYED BY WAL MART TO BAG GROCERIES! Perhaps one of the best comments from our brain dead imbeciles when confronting them asking them WHY I needed to do their job for them was the boiler plate response of (well if you don't like it then don't shop here) If it had been any other business I would have challenged the comment and argued my point but that's the thing about WAL Mart... employees
THEY ARE ALL!! BRAINDEAD!! There birth certificates are apology letters from the co---m company!!! I may have been able to allow a bit of grace if it were apparent that the store was not able to find employees or was extremely shorthanded but no.... Ohhh no no no... These brain-dead festering boils of fecal matter are everywhere in this asylum!!

So let's see here. Self check out? There is no such thing. You the customer are conned into doing the work that you are already paying someone else to do. It is already built into the cost of the items you are buying...

How do I feel about the idea of self check out?? Hmmm, lm not saying that self check out is a bad idea or anything like that. All I'll say is that you could take, oh I dunno, a broom say, dip it in a bucket of paint, shove it up a monkey's a-s, put him on a trampoline and he would splatter a better idea on the fu----g wall!!!!!

I would pay 10% over Walmart prices to have assistance checking out... back in my day, someone unloaded your cart as they scanned and checked you out then another person bagged your groceries, placed them back in your cart and asked if you needed assistance placing your groceries from the cart to your car.

Very Very frustrated with the lack of service AND products I have purchased for years, precovid, that are no longer stocked at Walmart.

I abhor Wal-Marts going totally self checkout! For a company thats public PR is that it's all about family's and the community, this action tells me its more about the MONEY! They say its for the customer's benefit for faster checkout, which as a customer i say that's NOT true. For bulk groceries a live cashier is faster, it takes LONGER to do it yourself. A cashier has been trained to do the scanning and bagging faster and better than the average customer!
Now Wal-Mart wants to make more money and have the customer's do for free what THEY should be doing for its customers as a THANK YOU we appreciate your business gesture! They really should stop the BS motto that they CARE about the community because everything they do is really about their profit and now its starting to really show with this all self checkout plan.
I've already been shopping some elsewhere, but THIS, now I'm going to not shop at Wal-Mart unless I'm desperate!
Aldis(better food prices by far and cashiers are AMAZING!), BJs, Shoprite! Amazon.com cant be beat For non food items!

WOW!!! so your going to have self checkouts instead of cashiers I hope this is in the states not in Canada I hope we have more sense than to agree to something so horrible hope the Canadian Government would put a stop to this. The Walmart CEO'S certainly don't have any empathy for anybody just want to line there own pockets with money they don't have enough poor things, with this self checkouts they save hourly wages, benefits, and taxes also anything stolen is a write off. Just look at all the people who will have no jobs people who rely on this kind of work so you can work full or part time. What are you trying to do you are the ones that are making the economy the way it is the only pockets your lining is your own how Greedy like my Grandmother always said the rich get rich and the poor get well you know they will always be the working poor because the CEO'S don't want to pay a living wage !!!!!!

I do not work for Walmart I am a senior citizen that shops regularly at walmart. I rather go through a line with a cashier than self check out. this too me is cutting out jobs. people need jobs everyone is not familiar with computers. I feel people who work for Walmart should check out customers. Hope this changes real so. this is one of the reasons the economy is like it is laying people off especially peopl of color.

As a Walmart cashier I really love interacting with the customers and they enjoy my positive interactions with them. Our store has been incredibly busy customers driving 40mins. To our store to have a live cashier check them out due to the fact there local Wahlmart is self checkout with one register open. Atleast 86% of the customers hate self checkout. Change is the future yet maybe going "Back to the future" is the way to go???.

So its not enough for Walmart to fire their cashier now they want the customer to work for them for free scanning and bagging.

I agree and like the leave it and go should customer have a problem. Let Walmart clean its mess. I also pay for people to work not a machine and contrary to Walmart's propaganda, their prices are not cheap at all. I have cut out most shopping there, filed complaints with consumer protection against one price, always lower on the shelf, and another at the register always higher. More than once I've walked out on a purchase because of that issue. An associate told me that most customers are du-b and do not look at their receipts or challenge overcharges at all. I was the first the person ever met. A quick google verifies this overcharge problem is nationwide. Why when it over charges it is a mistake, when I walk out without paying it is theft? Life exists without Walmart on this planet and to the company I say thank you for incentive for me to find it at competitors; same goes for Kroger Co.

Ok so my neighborhood walmart just removed cashiers from all but 4 lanes recently. The lines to use those lanes are INSANE! 2 times I have been recently and 2 times it has taken 45 minutes to get through the line. The alternative is to go through self checkout and do the work of a cashier who use to do it for me? Seriously? Without even a discount for doing the work? No hank you! I am going to Target or Whole Foods or Publix or all 3 of them from now on! Just not Walmart....not again!

Amen! I WILL NOT check myself through self checkout and have someone at the end supervising me like I might steal something. If Walmart wants my business, they will provide me with customer service. They are not the only game in town. I've already started making a list of other options. Wasn't hard at all!

In an article (dated June 30, 2020)
by Matt Smith, Walmart Corporate Affairs, entitled "New Checkout Experience Seeks to Eliminate the Wait and Add Options at the Register" it says - in part : "All the cashiers in the store transitioned to a new type of job called ‘Host.’ It’s the Host’s job to make sure the checkout experiences are exactly what customers want them to be. If a customer wants to check themselves out, a host is there to show them to an open register. If a customer wants to be checked out by an associate, a host rings them up and bags all of their items just like they would have in the old lane-driven layout."

Apparently employees at the Walmarts in my area didn't "get the memo" because that's not what they're doing here. I've stopped shopping at Walmart; so have a lot of other people I know. K-Mart tried this system back around 2001. By 2003 K-Mart went back to having cashiers at their registers - as well as self check out. Look where K- Mart is now...if you can find any. I for one am NOT going to work my regular job, where I'm getting paid, and then go work at Walmart (i.e., check my self out) for free.

I work 3rd shift and I feel that uscans have taken away the ability to moniter what our customers are ringing up. It is hard to moniter 8 stations with one person. Thieves are getting tricky. We were AP when we rung customers up at a register. So sad. Wal-Mart is losing so much money in theft.

What sense does it make to have the customer do all the work when walmart has 50 employees standing around not doing anything? You need something taken off you have to wait 10 minites for one of them to scan their key card, you need to buy alcohol you wait 10 more minutes for them to come scan their key card. Then you have a line going out the door so they can scan your receipt to make sure you scanned everything. I dont get paid to do all that work after working a full time job already. No human interaction, no regards for customers needing to use EBT or WIC, no room to put all the groceries after they have been scanned, dont even try to use coupons or you will have to wait another 10 minutes for an employee to scan their key card yet again...How is someone who is visually or physically handicapped supposed to do all that work? Ordering online and picking up is very convenient but everything inside the store is a joke and honestly not worth it. You can go to HEB, Kroger, Brookshires and other stores who still have people who scan, bag, and even sometimes help you load your groceries. Walmart makes enough money as it is, what a cop-out to make the paying customers do all your work without Walmart having to pay for the labor.

Walmart advertises open 24 hours, but no personal checkers early in the mornings, if I wanted to be a checker, I would apply for a job doing just that, so why do I have to check myself out. The prices at Walmart are not that cheap so since I am not getting paid to check out. why check out myself. Sooooooo—Walmart, I am checking out for good at your store and hopefully a lot of others will do the same and soon maybe no more walmarts, for doing away with a live person and maybe the live person that thought of this will be replace with a machine.

In my experience, not all cashiers offer a positive end to the shopping experience. Many barely grunt and often seem angry. Forget self-checkout or robot checkers. Amazon technology used in their retail stores, once fully developed, will replace it all and eliminate shrinkage at the same time. The bottom line is cashiers need to learn a new skill and the sooner the better.

Cashiers are an opportunity every time a customer comes in the store to check in on the customer experience. It’s just that the industry uses them wrong for the most part. Your cashiers should be brand ambassadors. If they were coached on how to welcome customers and how to be gracious, they could drive incredible brand loyalty.

Look at what chic fila did with their cashiers. It’s a fast food chain that is beloved just because of a chicken sandwich and teaching teenagers to say “How may I serve you?” and “My Pleasure.”

If a fast food chain can teach some teenagers to do it, a retail chain can certainly do it.

Walmart saves more money by having someone stealing than having a cashier. They save hourly wage, benefits, and taxes. Also they see shortages as write off. Wait till the robots start scanning for outs in the aisles

You are the same poster on the Safeway and Kroger pages just trying to put a different spin on your post. You don’t work for Walmart. You are a Safeway cashier about to be obsoleted. Learn a skill. Walmart developed a technology that has allowed anyone on the street to do your job. You have a “skill” that virtually anyone on the planet can apparently do. For free.
