Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

General Electric needs to sell GE Capital

Much like my own opinion, a short analysis of the changes at GE in this article characterizes them as generally positive. The author also points out that that the crucial point in making the company profitable and stable again is selling GE Capital, which I also agree upon. Hoping for some other opinions on this.

GE is too big and diverse and needs cash. Since JW, the goal of leadership has been to turn assets to cash for WS, dividends, buybacks. That got us where we are, along with some bad decisions with the cash. GE decision makers do not want to make things. Smaller firms, focused on one type of product come a long and are more nimble and focused and out perform GE. Each of the divisions are big companies in themselves. It is obvious GE is splitting itself up and you will likely all be working at the different spinoff companies some day.

I am no fan of the GE Capital. However, selling assets and cutting labor sort of miss es the whole problem at GE. The leadership at the top doesn't know what it really takes to create and maintain a competitive culture in manufacturing. All they seem to understand is how to cut costs. Of course responsible spending is part of success but employees don't take it seriously when exec's are grossly overpaid and our hard earned development and enginuity is outsourced to unsecure countries at the first possible moment. There seems to be some shortage of long term vision for GE. It's all about the fast money here. No easy fix.

GE should at least try. A buyer's due diligence may be the only way they can understand GE capital's true value. With our cultural lack of candor, I'm not sure we could do it on our own.
