Lowe's Announces Plans To Invest In More Than 65,000 Jobs In 2019

From CNBC: Lowe’s said Friday it plans to hire more than 65,000 people this year — some permanently and others on a seasonal basis — to help fill roles ranging from customer service to merchandising. It also is planning to ditch some existing roles, which the company says will help it “simply operations” in stores.

The home improvement retailer said 10,000 of the new jobs will be permanent and on its merchandising team. It said 6,000 will be full-time store managers and department supervisors in stores. And 2,000 will be technology roles to help build out Lowe’s website, while the remaining more than 50,000 positions will be temporary and filled ahead of the busy spring season.

“We are investing in key leadership positions across our stores to enhance customer service while also creating jobs that will improve the availability of our most popular products,” CEO Marvin Ellison said Friday in a statement. Ellison just joined Lowe’s from J.C. Penney last year, and already has made a number of significant moves including shutting stores and exiting Lowe’s business in Mexico.

Lowe’s said Friday that as it adds new jobs it will, meanwhile, be discontinuing its Project Specialist Interiors program in stores. It didn’t disclose which other positions it would be getting rid of.

The announcement by Lowe’s in the first week of 2019 comes as the U.S. is still seeing record-low unemployment, with many businesses in turn being forced to hike starting wages or offer other incentives to lure talent to fill open jobs. Last year, thanks to new tax legislation, Lowe’s said it was able to give some of its employees bonuses of up to $1,000. The retailer also expanded its benefits package — adding adoption assistance and paid parental leave.

In January 2018, Lowe’s said it planned to hire more than 53,000 full- and part-time staffers to meet peak spring demand. New this year is Lowe’s focus on filling tech positions and finding more help for inventory management, which Ellison has called out as one of the company’s weaknesses.

Lowe’s shares were last up about 3 percent Friday afternoon. The stock is only up about 1 percent over the past 12 months.

Last year about this time we were told that the store was planning on hiring over 100 new employees. We ended up with only about a third of that. Many of our partime associates picked up extra hours as a cashier or plant waterer

I am very disappointed in Lowe’s. I’ve been with them for 5 years, on Friday was told I have 30 days to find another position or leave with severance. I had just had an interview for an MSM position in October where the RSM told me that I wasn’t quite ready yet but he would be happy to groom me into that position. I was told to speak to my SM also about grooming me to the next level, which I did and he said we would start after January. Maybe these people didn’t know, maybe it was a shock for all, but there is no action plan for anyone that wants to stay except to tell us to apply for other jobs. I felt after the meeting they want us to take the money and go on. But why? I’ve been an extremely loyal employee and I really didn’t want to leave. My heart is just broken. I did apply for some other positions even out of my region, I will stay hopeful but I just feel completely let down :(

That press release was written and timed precisely to cover up the mass layoffs at Lowe's yesterday. It has no basis in truth. The truth is this: Thousands of people were laid off from Lowe's yesterday, and for them, what they were led to believe were careers with Lowe's are over. The corporate leaders of Lowe's are simply dishonest people.

First of all, this is smoke & mirrors lying to the news media/Wall Street. 90% of theses hires are seasonal & will be gone by July. The truth in the article is Lowes/Ellison is the only one shrinking a company & firing people unless your bankrupt Sears!!! Ellison is running Lowes into an early grave.

So repost of a press release is what is passing for truth now? Why don’t you have a take of your own?

If you were an employee you’d know this release was bs.

Unstable ground, no foundation, rocky roads ahead. You cannot chase the competition and win. You cannot continue to cut the heart and soul of a company and expect success.
