Out with the old in with the new. CareFirst has started its first cycle of layoffs under new CIO David Kaercher and CEO Brian Pienink. So far several long time employees (> 20 years) have been laid off as a part of a “change of leadership”. This comes as a surprise as CareFirst has requested a rate increase for yet another year in the individual marketplace and after posting gains of a fairly high margin in 2017. The layoffs arrive amidst a time where employees report the working conditions are no longer conducive to CareFirst’s commitment to a reasonable work schedule, flexibility, and competitive benefits. The company’s nonprofit status is a central theme used as management’s explanation for lower wages than market value, making some employees question if the statement layoffs are in the best interest of the company.

New Lay Off are coming in April. West Monroe will provide list then Director offsite meeting April 2 will discuss and layoffs begin April 11, 12, and 15. I was hearing 300+. I’m hoping I’m wrong but it seems that I’m not.

What are CIO David Kaercher's and CEO Brian Pienink's personal compensation packages worth?
It appears the organization is being gutted. Many dedicated and long serving employees are being let go in a rather inhumane manner. Employees were told nothing, with some being met at the door and told to leave. These are folks with coworkers who care deeply for one another and they aren't even able to say goodbye or collect their belongings themselves. With no information or explanation, layoffs are taking place daily throughout the week. Those who are left will apparently be getting some sort of collective message on Friday. I can't image going to work each day wondering if your team will be next. This is a cruel way to institute massive organizational change and restructuring. I am being quite serious when I say hope their mental health benefits are still good. Both existing and former employees will need them. There are better ways to do this kind of thing.
CareFirst used to be a great place to work. Guess those days are over. Ever try to pay your bill?
Unfortunate as the new CEO has publicly announced his desire to be inclusive and move the company in a new direction. Same old game - new name. Clearly after 2-3 months you've done detailed planning and know exactly who should be "let go". Sad.
