Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

NY to LA

Sincere question for anyone that worked at the NYC office and relocated to LA...why? Did they guarantee you wouldn’t be laid off? I can’t imagine people uprooting their life and in some cases their families life for a company that is so clearly dying.

2 days until the leftovers in NYC are let go. Thank you in advance for your service and welcome to the site!

There’s always been “A” in ES. They cannot understand the fast paced work ethic that NYC folks have. We are far superior in work ethic and tend to be able to withstand a larger SKU count whereas ES folks tend to be weak and passive.

Some people have moved for companies other than Mattel. Not many toy jobs left in the NYC area. I'm getting the feeling that the negative comments on this thread are either A. LA folks who feel threatened by the influx of people with FP experience and New York work ethic or B. Bitter NYC people who are too afraid to make a change in their lives.

Seems to me that going from NYC to LA under these circumstances is like following a girl who has dumped you numerous times, and now has dumped you again to move to LA, and you're coincidentally moving there too because this time is the time you're gonna make it work! I don't know what makes people think that even though its once prosperous brands are dying, that Mattel is not next in line to fall. Best of luck though!

Oh and also California is on fire.

Disagree with the "boring as f----all" comment. There is just as much to do here as NYC, it's just spread out a bit more. NYC has turned into an overpriced corporate husk of a city. Not the vibrant place it once was.

LA s---s. It's a desert, the people are brainless and while the weather is nice, it's boring as f---all. Don't do it unless you have spent months here and are sure because you could get laid off a month after making the move. Speaking from personal experience.

The word "flip" or "flipper" is a derogatory term used on Filipino people. This maybe the reason for the accusation. If so, not kind words.

I dunno. Surfboards? flipper? isn’t that a lane a-- dolphin show? Seems like there’s a running west coast theme. I think folks are just too damn hyper-sensitive.

@VSHDruf-eyqm It's the year 2018, everything's clearly racist, don't you know?

sorry i’m new to all this. What did the person say that was racist?

Why are you such a coward and go on sites talking vile about people? Tell them to their face if you have so many issues with that person. Do you not have the adequate communication skills to solve an issue and move forward? You're clearly racist by your choice of words, so I don't expect you be very bright.

Why would anyone gainfully employed at mattel be on this site looking to see if people are talking smack about them unless they do nothing all day but surf the site? better get back to work there flipper or you’ll be polishing surfboards with your hair wax.

Also FP NYC alumni who came to LA a few years back and switched to another company couple of years back as well before the really bad layoffs started to happen.

Have done much better for my career and job market is really robust here.

I'm a FP NYC alumnus who relocated to LA a few years back. Not for Mattel but for a different company. I moved here because the job market is much stronger than in the Northeast, especially for toys, consumer products, etc. I get contacted by headhunters all the time for other LA area jobs now that I have the California address. Things are much less stuffy out here, too... less hiererchy and no one talking down to you. Only complaint is that it's a b--ch relocating and trying to start a new social network at my age (which I will not disclose).

Most people who do it are young and its just another adventure/experience, especially if you don't have kids or real estate holding you in NYC. For some, it's a great move as LA job market for CPG companies is much better than NYC so outside of design usually people make out much better in a long run. Most of ex NYC transplants are doing very good now.

I was relocated and laid off less than one year after. It does happen. Do NOT take it unless you want to be in LA long term at another company or can easily get yourself back to where you want to be. Good luck to anyone joining ES. Not exactly a welcoming place to transfers.

People were/are desperate. Toy Jobs aren't what they used to be on the East Coast. Just about extinct unless you want to work for some small junky family run nightmare. I don't believe that the NY transplants will last. Most likely they will be used for their process, property knowledge until their counterparts in ES are up to speed and then shown the door. Hasbro did that with the first round of big layoffs. Hired up all of the mattel folks they could get. pumped them for info, segregated them from big projects then showed them the door.

It's the ones that begged to be transferred to ES that I feel bad for. You weren't wanted but you begged for a spot and you think that you'll last? That's going to be a hard fall.

It’s a free ride to LA if that’s where you want to be anyway; you don’t go because of Mattel. I wish the folks in LA well, but there are no guarantees for anyone out there. You have to have other reasons to make a move like that, or else you’re just starting out in your career and have someone to back you up while exploring. Best of luck to all.

I can't speak for others but personally I saw it as my chance to pursue my life long dream to become a big time Hollywood star. NYC has some showbiz, but LA is where it's at if you want to be in the pictures! I'll be able to work my day job at Mattel until I hit the big time.
