I was with B&N for 13 years and was laid off. I took the severance package that precluded me from ever working for B&N in the future (think about the logic of that policy) I ended up at Belk and was there for almost 2 years. PURE HELL. I had to quit before I needed to be hospitalized. I contacted corporate HR and they started a year long process to get rid of the manager. I then found FOLLETT. Not a perfect company (are there any REALLY?). What a difference. Great hours and people and I now have a real life, making more money than at B&N or Belk! Check them out! Too old? I am 61 and have now been with Follett for 2 years!

Staffing work doesn't mesh with my personality either - I'm one of the weirdos that likes retail too. I do not like my new job, but where I live retail is dead. The local Barnes and Noble was one of the better places to work in the industry here and the other places I saw were awful. The other job that I had at a clothing store was miserable. I was also pretty tired of having to work two part time jobs at 58+ hours total a week just to make ends meet.

I'd rather be talking to people about books or working in receiving than silently staring at a computer screen for hours every day but I need to eat and keep warm during the winters, so I have to adapt. If the company still exists this holiday season I'll see if I can temp at my old store on the weekends-- I miss the people I worked with every day.

I hope you find a way to keep doing the work you enjoy, but you're never too old to start over or learn new things. There are a lot of temps where I work and most of them don't have degrees.

you may find retail depressing, but after 17 years working out on the floor, it is LITERALLY all I know how to do!!! staffing agency work seems overwhelming and doesn't seem to mesh with my personality, much less my education :)

After our receiving manager was fired I started looking for new work because I sure as hell didn't want to be the only receiver. Even if I got 36-40 hours every week they were still illegally not giving me benefits.

After a few interviews at retail/service jobs I decided that the industry is extremely depressing. I went to a staffing agency and now make $5.50 more an hour at a temp to hire office job where I get an HOUR paid lunch every day. I even get (crappy) benefits from the staffing agency because I'm doing 40 hours a week. In a few more months I am going to be hired on full time with a large pay increase and good benefits.

It took a little more than two months of 36-40 hour weeks in large receiving BY MYSELF, but now I am doing much better. Do yourself a favor and get out of retail.

I am not a college graduate. I did, however, complete about 2 years of college. i'm not looking for a CAREER, since I am almost 50. I just want a job!!! most of the things I find are marketing companies looking for "customer service reps." not what I have in mind. trying to get a job at Walgreens, but I don't think i'll get hired because I am probably overqualified. that's all I want, though. just somewhere I can do the work, keep my head down, get health insurance, and make enough to live.

I am 60 and a woman. I have worked 38 years in retail receiving. Half at barnes and nobles and half at another company. That is the kind of work I prefer do. I have a limited schedule because of other obligations so I have had a hard time finding anything. I do have other income but no health insurance . I have looked into a lot of health insurance plans and they are all ridiculous. Unless you have a catastrophic illness you are paying a weekly or monthly premium for nothing because you will never reach your deductible. I wish all of you the best of luck .

Not having health insurance scared the hell out of me. I couldn't afford the COBRA. After giving it some serious thought I decided to apply for medicaid and I qualified so that is what I'm going to have for the next 11 months. It was a hard decision because I've never had any sort of assistance before and it made me feel a little queasy- in my mind there is a stigma attached. But now it's a relief and a huge weight of worry off my shoulders. Although I didn't apply for food stamps (or the EBT card which is the modern day equivalent) it seems I qualified for a little help with food too. Once I find a job the food stamps will stop but I get to keep the insurance until May 1st 2019 . At that point I won't qualify any longer and take whatever health benefits my employer would offer. Not my ideal situation but at least I don't have to worry about paying medical bills for the rest of my life if I break an arm or sprain an ankle.

Curious. What are you doing after your benefits run out? The COBRA monthly payments were too expensive. Took the subsidized benefits, but will run out very soon with severance. Have you looked into any health/dental plans?

I am just over that 50 yr mark and also having some trouble with finding a job. I've only been halfheartedly looking the last month because of a family event coming up that I don't want to miss. I decided my best option is a staffing agency. After next week I will go to an agency that was highly recommended and see what they offer. Maybe you can try an agency and see what they have available? Best of luck to you.
