Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

What keeps you still working at General Electirc?

There's is a lot of vile negativity and GE bashing on this forum right now (it has actually been like this for a while now, but let's set this aside for a moment or two).

As a change of pace, tell us what keeps you working at General Electric.

Why have you not quit yet and gone elsewhere to work?

I would be concerned if I had GE stock. I retired and sold out stock at 32.51, thanks to GE. I also took the pension and ran. Now I worry about the pension but am in better shape than those that have not started drawing. It's a sad situation. Many GE managers have the big head and could care less about your ideas...

@1fve not weird at all. A lot of us understand and feel the same.

For myself, I really enjoy(ed) the people that I work with in the local office. Most of my job stress comes from dealing with others outside of my office (read CoreTech, and upper tier managers). They simply have no clue what they are doing.

But with the rounds of layoffs and the recent voluntary retirement, that one thing that is keeping me around is becoming harder to justify. My resume is polished and I've been taking a look at local opportunities.

In a weird way, I hope for either a divestiture of my site or a layoff. Either way, I'd be out of GE.

I am waiting for a plant closing. Cash in on what I thought was a career. Guess it was short lived and found out after the failed battery plant Power is just a job and not a career.

*401k- everyone has one

*Garbage healthcare- there are places with better

  • competitive wage- everyone has that too

  • no raises- most places give something.

Plant closing I pray for or a big layoff. My wife makes better money than most of those egotistical, narcissistic, kid GE managers make.

QgoE4b6-ikw, you're absolutely correct schenectady is ran by incompetent management that think they know the job think they can improve things but only make them worse, trust me I was part of the barshop I know. they fail to realize we do what they tell us to do and follow a methods book to do our jobs. incompetentcy is what killed ge. and all the barshop managers are incompetent pieces of s**t.

I'm a long term guy and I had a lot of respect for the company when I was hired. It wasn't until year 4-5 that I started to see how badly this division was run (power). Managers only care about their metrics and bonus and don't want to hear your good ideas that will save the company thousands. There are so many knowledge people who know how to make things better and get the job done but management doesn't care. They say we are a "team" but we are all treated differently. Favoritism runs rampant. It's just so frustrating because I see what a great company we can be and I feel like I can't change a thing. GE created the 2nd pay scale for the newer employee's because they needed a quick fix to look good on paper. They shot themselves in the foot. Sometimes I feel like this company is run on a day to day basis. If the company actually listened to good ideas, we wouldn't have a 2 tier scale. Now with the lower pay people are looking the other way for a job. Why come to GE? We offer less pay with less benefits then our competitors. I don't know how GE went down this path of "Manager Superiority" but it's ruined this company with one bad idea after another. I knew this day was coming and I want to help fix it, but GE needs to let us help instead of laying us off.

It used to be the pride of working for what was a great company. Now it's just inertia, like most of the people I work with.

Inertia. But looking actively for anything better right now. Used to think loyalty to the company was a real thing of value. Screw that. Funny that the people who on their own have left my group after the layoffs were actually the top performers who had zero difficulty finding good jobs elsewhere.

I left oil and gas to join GE Power and it's been one sh1t storm to the next for the last 5 years. I'm just going roll with it, do what I can as a professional and not worry about what I cannot control. If I'm laid off I'll worry about it then and find something else otherwise I'll give myself an ulcer.

To be honest i am SPB that makes more money than most compariable jobs outside of GE. That might change because the way GE is moving with no raises and expensive healthcare. If i was under 5 years of service i would be looking to move on.

I've been at GE awhile. So, still on the old pay scale and still have pension. There is no way I would want to work there as a new employee. They have no pension, and getting paid about 17 an hour for a company known to lay off. Hell, some cities in this country have a minimum wage of 15 an hour. GE is not as rewarding as it once was

Pension and coworkers...hard to voluntary leave either behind. If pension accrual is frozen, however, I’ll be looking for more $ and better benefits elsewhere.

What company still offers pensions? The only people I know with pensions are government employees. Look how well that "business" is run...

GE is a joke, no pension, less than stellar healthcare plan for wife and kids, (wait till 2019 it will be worse) no raises, and wage cuts. Managers threaten blue collar workers. I am glad I left I am hearing Schenectady is a ran by a bunch of snot nose College egotistical kids with a title for a company that use to be great. I AM GLAD I QUIT! Enjoy that low standard of living and being treated like a McDonald’s employee. HA HA HA

Still searching for that “GE soul” that should permeate the company’. Where meritocracy is not a fake and empty word in the mouths of our leaders and where talents are primed over “connections”. Call me a dreamer...

If it wasn't for the pension, I would have left already. The rest of the comp package is mediocre.

-Decent salary

-High demand, value add role = satisfying & job security (I know, I know nobody is safe...I feel as safe as they come within a GE lead by an axe man on a mission to lean the company)

-Permissive vacation - I don't use this as much as I could but my boss is very supportive of taking time off to be with family and relax

-Speaking of boss, my manager is AWESOME

-I work on a strong team where everyone works hard, has decent moral, and has everyone else's back in times of need (that's what it's all about)

-401k contribution. Automatic 3% contribution by GE, now annually, and they match 50% of up to 8%. I contribute 8%, they contribute 4% (match) + 3% (contribution) = 15% going to my 401k...not the best but really solid

-Paternity leave = 6 weeks...don't know if we are having any more kids but this is great for fathers that are planning a family

-GE is full of extremely intelligent individuals that have empowered me to advance my career within the company...I know all plants/businesses may not feel this way but in my building I do.

For some of us, with lots of years and still in the pension that is a big driver. If I was 10 yrs or less into my career, I would be looking.
