Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Humm, We were told Not to be negative

At a morning huddle we were told not to complain or be negative, or we would be gone quickly. This is great for morale, (sarcasm) . Truthfully I thought this was totally unprofessional. And so did many of my peers. Management does not want to hear our fears anymore. I understand they are bombarded with everyone's fears, while we watch our com padres get let go...but truthfully, it's very hard to smile and act like everything is golden right now, wondering if you are next.

I'm not complaining, just never ever had management say this. Any real advise is welcomed. Please no more negative, and I know we can leave, I just really never expected this from a company I have been with for many many years.

I don't think facing reality and telling the truth is negative. It is worse to deny, lie to yourself and others, be blindly loyal and bury your head in the sand!

Re-institute pay raises and the employee discount and maybe your employees will consider being positive. Otherwise, be fortunate they even bother showing up at the place to start with.

The beatings will continue until morale improves!

Management and leadership are two different things. Don't expect any SHC manager to provide true leadership or advice, because they have none to give. Do your job the best you can, for as long as you have it. Keep your sense of humor intact and you'll be fine.

I worked for 6 years at Kmart. The thing I miss the least is the negativity. The environment was constantly negative...and it came from the top down. No raises. No praise. No incentive to do better or be better. Anything that was accomplished was sh-- all over. Meet 4 of 5 targets? Well, let's lambast and flog you over the one you didn't make. We had those joke of a meetings to "improve our culture". Show Pride??? Are you kidding me? Is having a store with a leaking roof showing pride? Is refusing to update fixtures, displays, and merch showing pride? Embracing Feedback?? Is that why they took away the annual survey? Clearly, SHC didn't want to hear it anymore, so they buried their heads right in the sand. Attitude, ethos, mindset...it starts at the top. So to tell minimum wage people who are doing the work of 3 to 4 people and are about to have their stores close to not be negative is like the biggest joke I've ever heard!

Management must be panicking. If everything was fine they would be reassuring to people. When everything is not fine they are too nervous and stressed themselves that they do not have the energy to reassure other people. If the plane is fine it is easy for the pilot and stewards to smile and reassure people that turbulance is normal when the plane is going down it is time for everyone to shut up and let the pilot think and give him some space.

The 1st

amendment is not valid at sears. Shut your mouth and smile.

That pretty much sums it up right there. I explain to my coworkers that they have to keep up the appearance that the company is headed in the right direction. For the employees they want you to be oblivious to the situation and don't pay any attention to the news, media,or however you get your information. Eddie keeps loaning the company money so he can continue his real estate dealing on the side and when he files bankruptcy he can say he tried to keep the company alive. All while collecting money and real estate from the debt Sears is going to owe him.

(Long explanation incoming....)

As someone who is looking at this from a neutral point of view I can understand both sides. In one hand I think that everyone deserves to be informed about what's going on and the risk involved when it comes to working at sears. Especially if you depend on your job to support your family. Its the least they could do right?..On another hand I can understand why management wants to keep this information to themselves to reduce the level of chaos and unrest. The level of unrest in the company is already pretty high even if a lot of the management ignores it since it's easier to ignore it over and over than to address it over and over. Adding to it would solve nothing. You would only lose the remaining bits of order that remain and that would progress the company down the path of bankruptcy even faster.

"Ignorance is bliss" almost perfectly sums of what they're trying to do. Governments of the world do this all the time (although I won't get too far off into a tangent.) The issue now is the fact that the problems have become to big to hide. Everyone knows what's happening. The media knows. Your customers know. You're managers and upper management all know. And that makes all of your problems worse, not better.

The media crucifies sears every chance it gets. Your customers no longer bother to shop there because of all the rumors and they especially don't want your service plans, the bread and butter of your company. Management stops caring and start doing the bare minimum because it doesn't matter anyway. Your fellow associates stop caring and they do the bare minimum because it doesn't matter anyway. No one wants to work for you because it's no longer considered stable so you get the bottom of the barrel workers...who never cared to begin with. And the remaining people who once cared are leaving and/or they quit caring as well.

You were told not to be negative because negative doesn't help your situation. Sears management isn't the best at giving direction in the most professional way... at least from what I saw when I worked there, but I can understand the main idea they were probably trying to get across. The people who spread negativity then leave only make those around them miserable, especially those who can't leave for whatever reason.

Hopefully that was a more "professional" explanation for you.

I guess I should add that I don't work for sears any longer. I don't , and never have worked in upper management. I do sort of manage projects in another field though so I think I see what they're trying to do..as useless as it may be at this point.
