Thread regarding Advance Auto Parts Inc. layoffs

Another Radical Change?

It seems there is a lot of corporate activity revolving around the independent owners side of the CARQUEST store group. Many owners are unhappy with the perpetual product lineup changes and lack of DC inventory in many parts of the country. Most of these stores are in more rural locations where their inventory requirements differ from the company city stores that focus on fuzzy dice and all the chemicals you could ever need. The loss of longtime stalwarts of quality have taken their toll on sales. Gone is WIX, Gates, KYB, and other veteran suppliers that offered stable quality and reputable product to the independent store groups customers. Today, you often don't know what is really in the box.

What happens when AAP completes the plan to spin this group off? Many owners are looking for alternatives to preserve their livelihood. They certainly don't want an AAP logo on their business.

It's a new face same story. Communication doesn't happen. You can beat your head against the wall but nothing will trickle down. And if it does, it may not be right. When I was there our VP told us DC transfers would stop. They didn't. He never came back and said "woops I was wrong" or "we changed our mind", or, "I will find out what happened". We got nothing from him with that or anything else really. He came from whirlpool though so I'm sure he was more than qualified for automotive aftermarket.

We need to know what's going on, we're out here trying our best with what we have left to work with, less labor hours and very low inventory in the stores. No one seems to care, we have families to support just like you Greco. I thought these new people would be better than the Best Buy crew but I'm having second thoughts.....

Have you heard about the new rotating electrical line yet? I wonder if units will be packed in rice for shipping.

In the eyes of a the new AAP leadership (which ironically is mostly CQ guys anymore) the independents make up such a small % of the sales that it is no longer a focus. Its only a matter of time before they spin off this business or try to put lipstick on the pig and call it Worldquest.

One of the biggest issues with the independents is product confidence. You used to be able to promote lines like WIX filters knowing that the manufacturer had the customers back in the event of suspected product failure. The field representation for WIX always handled customer issues promptly and followed up. How many independents have left after having to eat an engine due to a failed off shore filter from AAP? Is there any manufacturer field reps left?

This was a true concern and legit problem since AAP took over CQ. We have lost a lot of independent customers that left for exactly the reasons you stated above. When I worked for the company I fielded a lot of calls from owners that didn't like direction the inventory was heading. Switching batteries from DEKA was a HUGE problem for customers. And to add insult to injury when the stores needed support they talked to "Frank" from India. Customers would go days without answers to their questions or they would call us to avoid the hassle. That worked until our boss (an outside hire) who didn't understand the sensitivity with independent owners forced us to direct the customers back to India.

The independent customers will do what they have to in order to survive. I won't be surprised when more customers leave. And to be honest who could blame them? Doesn't seem like many good reasons to stay.

I was an independent until last month when they dumped me to support the local Advance store that is hurting. There is NO support for independents in this part of the country,we were not wanted.I will post more when we settle some issues,I have some information that I found out about and they are not pleased.
