Background Check Inquiries?

Is anyone familiar with how background checks work when finding a new job, going back to schools, etc.? Do they usually contact corporate HR? BU HR Partner? Supervisor?

I am taking this industry downward cycle to go back for my Master's. I have been accepted but the school runs a 3rd Party Background check to verify my employment dates. I would like to work until a few months before schools starts however would rather tell my supervisor and manager about my plans, rather than an angry HR rep or 3rd party phone call.

If you are layed off, resigned, or terminated with cause, the company will report only the time you worked there and your jon title. HR 101.

Feel free to embellish your resume with experience and accomplishments gained at companies you actually worked for. Those companies will only state for how long you've worked for them and maybe confirm your last job title, nothing else. Absolutely nothing else.

I have hired many people. I have never checked a reference. If you are giving me a reference I already know what they are going to say, no need to call

It could also be a criminal background check

If it's a background check that the school performs, that probably means they run your credit report.

The Employment Verification link that @xnh refers to only prints your "years of the job", "current salary" or both. That's all. Nothing else.

Go to the HR web page and look for the link on the right side called "Employment Verification." Make sure you are on the United States HR page. Good luck!

Chevron is very cautious about what is communicated, and will for all intents and purposes only confirm that you worked here. They won't even answer the "are they eligible for rehire" question. Sure some will say that they could take out your manager for a steak dinner and try to get the real scoop, but that only really happens in the world of forums. Chock this down as one of the few positive outcomes in our overly litigious world.
