Filing for unemployment benefits?

Just curious if anyone is planning to do this or if it is prohibited due to receiving a severance?

And do NOT answer NO to the question. I did and was told today that is what is holding up my claim. Chevron reported the severance to the TWC but I didn't.

Being approved is no guarantee. I have been approved by the TWC but unemployment compensation is not guaranteed in spite of what I was told by my HR rep. My paperwork says that "involuntary terminated for "Lack of Work" is generally acceptable to qualify for unemployment benefits." I called the TWC and was told THEY make that decision, NOT the employer and that since I received severance pay, I may not be eligible. Do not count on getting those benefits. I was told the determination would take 4 weeks.

In Texas, you can file for unemployment benefits online. It's very easy. Just do a Google search for "Texas Workforce Commission". The severance you get from Chevron is a lump sum amount, so when questioned on the application, just state NO when asked if you received a severance payout from your former employer. There are two types of severance payouts in Texas (and perhaps other States). The type Chevron pays out does not disqualify you to collect unemployment benefits right away. Any severance that is paid out on a scheduled basis, like weekly or monthly, would disqualify you for immediate collection of benefits. So just answer "NO" to the severance question. Your online application should only take 5 minutes. Good luck and I hope you find a new job soon.

I filed over the phone in California. Six minutes wait time then 10 minutes talking to a fellow and it was done. Absolutely no complications at all. It seems as though Chevron had already given them good info on my situation.
