So why not take some time to learn new skills? You might not feel like learning anything new right now, but it might make a difference between pay and no pay down the line.
Learning new skills and keeping up to date always makes sense. But even then it becomes increasingly difficult to find a new job as you age. You can go into an interview, knock it out of the park (or "crush it" as younger people will say) and then get an email weeks later saying that they "aren't moving forward with you". Of course, no reason is given and if you ask why all you will get is radio silence.

This is a great post. Years ago when I was part of GM's restructuring, I had skills specific to GM only, and they weren't universal. Made it tough when trying to find a new gig. We owe it ourselves to constantly be adding to our knowledge and making ourselves marketable.
Don't let your mind go idle or daydream while you do familiar things. Instead, let your attention follow what your hands and body do. For example, as you drive into a parking lot and park on a foggy morning, pay attention to the little habits of shutting off the car and you may also remember to turn off your headlights. If you do things just a touch slower than you need to, you can boost your chances of staying rooted in the present.
