Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Further Proof...

That Lowes does not care about our safety.

I heard a very pregnant associate tell another associate that Sedgwick told her she could go in leave but would lose her job if she chose to do so.

While we are bombarded with people, Lowe’s is doing the bare minimum to protect anyone.

I understand they have to stay open. But I also believe it should be our choice to stay or go on leave...and we shouldn’t be reprimanded or lose our jobs. We shouldn’t have to have proof we should be at home either. A simple “I don’t feel comfortable taking this risk” should be enough.

And why not?? Imagine if they told everyone they had the option to be out until things got better, no questions asked, and could come back later. So many people would jump at that. Imagine the money they would save on payroll. We just started the fiscal year so no one really has very much vacation/holiday time.

But instead people are being threatened to NOT go on leave and there are others having to jump through hoops because they don’t want to risk their health or the health of their family. Why? Because Lowes knows they can’t keep up their sales if associates sit this out.

So, instead of them letting us make our own decisions, we will be forced to risk ourselves to line their pockets....or else.

And I don’t want to hear “you can quit”. This is not about c-appy management or not enough pay. People are dying and that is some serious sh–. People aren’t wanting to leave and find other jobs. They simply want to be able to keep themselves and their families at home and as safe as possible.

If you don’t want to be told to quit anymore then stop complaining. Life is all about choices and decisions made using risk/benefit ratio.

What is “very pregnant”? Either you’re pregnant or you’re not.

If the associate is less then a year in tenure that’s a Family medical leave issue not blowes. Very doubtful she would lose her job.

Call your doctor. Without explicitly saying where you work simply explain that they will give you two weeks paid but you need a letter recommending it from them. Putting it like that makes your employer sound like a real scrooge which incidentally is exactly what they are.

Though actually no, because scrooge saw the error of his ways. Lowe's ain't learning anything from this except "line goes down :( ".

What many don't realize that say "you can quit" is, we all don't live in metro areas.

Where I am, most everyone I know drives 20 - 45 minutes average to work. This is not just lowe's people, everyone I know and even my customers. We joke that if we all just coordinated, we could change jobs and not have to drive so far.

My biggest account drives 50 minutes one way to work. This is after his 3 previous employers were bought out or went under. Even then, he's making less than he did 10 years ago.

I am making as much as I did 30 years ago. My company was bought out just to acquire rights and put out of business.

If you live in a high density area, you have more options. Options not all have.

I'm lucky in that I'm retiring this year. After what I've lost in the 10's of thousands in the last week due to a poor stock market, I may have to work a few months longer, but if Lowes does anything stupid more than they are, I can at least leave. Mortgage paid, no debt. I'm just feeding my retirement as much as I can.

On my store, most elderly employees are working because they were self employed and failed to invest in a 401K or paid into social security and now have little to draw from. Before you play a tiny fiddle, remember these people didnt have the Internet or training like we do today to teach them the value of investing in themselves. Most of you scholars only know because your parents or family member were in the same boat.

So, be kind. Not everyone CAN quit because they hate Lowe's. In many cases, Lowe's is the largest employer in the area.

Contact Aine Cain at Business Insider. She broke the big story about low morale in the stores. Marvin released a statement to the media the following day. So the bad press stung a bit. If you want to do more for yourself and for fellow associates—mobilize the press and get the word out.
