Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Anybody feels safe now?

Is there anybody who is now feeling safe at GM - considering that layoffs seem to be done for a foreseeable future?

I'll be honest, after what just happened, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to relax once again and think I have any kind of long term security here - no matter what those in the upper management tell us.

This place has been ruined for me.

GM vehicles are always at the top of Consumer Reports Best Cars lists.

No, not at all.

GM biggest problem is that they don’t have any competitive products that are not obscenely expensive. Trucks and big SUVs are their bread and butter, the rest of the product line is just straddling along. Well, there are the nice 7-seat crossovers, for whoever wants a van without calling it a van; but that’s it.

So, the next time a recession hits, or the price of gas shoots through the roof, and people are no longer willing to spend 40 grand on a truck, they are in trouble.

The Equinox has been a disappointment - underpowered and overpriced.

Camaro lags behind both the Charger and Mustang in appeal.

Their car line up is, effectively, dead.

Electric vehicles are so far all talk.

Cadillac never broke into the luxury niche held by BMW and Mercedes and Lexus - but it’s profuct line is priced as if it was the snob’s wet dream.

Ford and Chrysler are not in any better position.

Travel from the Midwest to the South, Southwest, or both coasts - you know, the booming parts of the country where the young and successful tend to congregate - and see how many GM products you find. Not very many. Especially in the South, where you see as many Toyota and Honda trucks as American trucks, and more foreign than American cars in the booming cities like Atlanta or Nashville.

Or look at Tesla. I don’t like Musk and I have major reservations about safety and reliability of his cars, but they are fun to drive and beautiful and have a tremendous snob appeal. Just the opposite of what most people would say about the GM or Ford branded stuff, no matter how hard they try. Well, there’s Corvette, but it’s a different niche.

They are making the employees pay the price for years of top brass’ mismanagement, shortsightedness, and total lack of understanding of the modern market.

What happened in 2009 was they continued at a smaller scale and avoided press attention. Little pockets of layoffs here and there...

Coming from HP, I loved working for GM. We got away from that HP culture that you could lose your job any time. Work force reductions were the norm. But when I got here, at the time, 5 years ago, I didn't know Randy Mott was head of IT. While I didn't worry like I did about getting canned, it was always in the back of my mind. All it took was the forced rankings last year for me to know the HP work culture had arrived and work force reductions were next. Well, here we are. Welcome to the HP work culture where you can be let go any time.

I heard the same rumor of layoffs in August or September. GM has not completed their reductions yet. When my country was at civil war everyone was scared. I again feel that same feeling in my stomach when I enter the VEC parking lot. I can function as this is about the same feeling.

What a damn shame for people to live that way and feel like this. I know I loved my job and my colleagues , maybe the whole point is to be demoralizing so more people will leave the company , I don't know the answer , however Ford seems to be going in the same direction unfortunately. I strongly feel GM has other agendas that do NOT include the American people. Business is in the business to make profits we all understand that however at what cost in the long run not only for you and I for our pursuing happiness but as the United States as a whole in the long term? How is it now Ford is following suit , Ditto to GM , same thing hire a bunch of folks just to fire them? No there is far more to this story , it boils down to mis management and lack of forsite , crazy shifts in the market and many other manufactures to choose from on American soil , people in this country have the freedom to choose any vehicle they like , our government has allowed to much leeway to these companies , we support them and we get sold out in return. None of these CEOs , CFOs are broken hearted over any of it because to them it's business as usual and business is good.

Why do you think layoffs are done?

I've heard rumors of another round in August or September.
