Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Any luck yet?

Apart from those folks who were already applying before the layoffs, and already found new jobs, has anyone had any luck with the companies who were claiming to offer jobs to those of us who were laid off last month? I have yet to hear anything from the places where I applied, with the exception of GM, where I was rejected by the automated system within 24 hours of applying...

I can relate with unemployment or lack there of in the next month. I was also contract @ the GM Warren Tech Center and let go December 1st. I worked in purchasing and realize how underpaid I was compared to Blue Badges. There is a GM thread here posting salaries which makes me ill.

I still haven’t found a job and I doesn’t help now that thousands more were laid off in February. Seriously considering other fields now as even with a degree I feel the general message is that anyone out of school 10/15 or more years is outdated and not really desirable to potential employers.

Word to the wise for anyone considering working contract. Consider the hourly rate x 48 weeks a year to give you a better idea of what your actual pay will be. Don’t expect to have any performance review either as they are not allowed but the job will go indefinitely. Good luck to all.

Still plugging along applying, etc. but my 40 year old something self needs some luck at this point. Michigan Unemployment benefits need to be extended! They were 26 weeks but appears to be 20 now. I’ve applied to 100+ job postings and went through countless long online applications, have had 3 in person interviews since the first round of contractor lay-offs the end of November. With all the GM furloughs, starting with July shutdown, and before various holidays, the 20 weeks of Michigan unemployment will be exhausted in 😩 a few weeks for me. I know I can’t be the only one out there concerned!? Since GM folks had severance I’m thinking unemployment claims have not moved the needle enough in MI’s % Unemployed... ?? There has to be a higher % for extensions. With that, of course I’d rather be employed but this is where I’m at! Anyone else relate?

I've usually done better for myself than through recruiters, but if you want one, I've tried a bunch and an outfit that actually got me a decent permanent job was K-Force.

Any suggestions to find a good job recruiter? It seems that there are more job recruiters than umemployees.

I got an offer. Pay is lower mostly due to bonus. Salary about the same. Hopefully, less stress and better leadership too. Looking forward to it.

I accepted an offer and will start soon. There are a lot of jobs out there for IT in Michigan. Pay and benefits will never be the same but the severance will make up for that.

So many companies in Austin are hiring. Indeed, homeaway, home depot, apple, visa, red river, just to name a few.

But it is not easy to get your resume to the hiring manager by simply applying online, you need network to get people to pass your resume to the right hands. In my case, the company HR recruiter contacted me on linkedin directly. Do utilize LinkedIn. One of three cases of job offer of my friends, he got friend referral to the hiring company director.

Thank you Mr, President. I was also looking for a job during GM's last mass layoffs, and it was tough as hell then, even the highways were empty. The difference isn't even night and day, more like winter and summer. Good thing businesses (including GM) got tax cuts and incentive to grow American.

I got an offer last week. I did not think I would get laid off, so did not look before. It is very good offer. I am at austin and am IT.

Three of my coworkers who got laid off also got job offer already, and they are either better or comparable offers to GM. Austin job market is great!

Do not worry, you will all get better jobs than GM.
