Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why are our employees more negative than other O&G companies?

Former employee here. I have been checking out the discussion boards for other O&G companies on this site. There is a huge difference in the intensity of the negative feelings from XOM people towards XOM (compared to how Shell, Chevron, BP, etc. employees feel about their companies).

I was a long tenured ExxonMobil employee and used to have great respect for our company. But in the last few years the culture at XOM has changed dramatically for the worse. I was part of the wave laid-off during the summer (they lied and pretended it was a PIP program).

I have read the boards for other O&G companies on this site. I am struck by the fact that the employees commenting in the discussion boards for other O&G companies on this site are not nearly as negative towards their company, compared to the strongly negative comments made by XOM employees towards XOM.

My theory is that there is a lot more disgust at our company at the way they handled the situation. XOM lied to us and to the public. Management lacked integrity. The entire industry has suffered from the drop in demand, but XOM has handled the situation in a way that has completely destroyed employee morale and turned the work environment absolutely toxic.

What are your thoughts? Especially interested in comments from people that know something about other O&G companies.

Yep. These comments are a sad confirmation of just how f'ed up this once mighty organization has descended to. Misinformation, cloaknand dagger communications..as someone already pointed out. Nationally broadcast "NOTHING TO SEE HERE FOLKS. NOTHINS CHANGED. SMILE AND WAVE BOYS & GIRLS."

Today is myblast day with XOM.

I am one of those High Performers who had a record year. last year. (Actually the Best year ever. More new business than mybentire other team member combined. But we wouldn't want that fact to get in the way of a nicely fabricated charade nownwould we?)

In May, I was told point blank by my Manager (after reviewing my Performance Development System accomplishments for 1 April 2019 through 31 March 2020.) "WOW! What a year. I have zero doubt that we're going to be able to move you up in ranking and rating again this cycle." (This is also after I received an $11k salary hike last year for significant achievements the PDS cycle before!)

Lo and behold..on July 10th, My Manager and his snake in the grass Region Manager double team me on a Zoom call wherein they have the unmitigated gall to say to me "Er...great year last year. You should be so proud...HOWEVER, we've determined that your performance puts you in a "Needs significant improvement " category. You have 3 options: 1. Agree to a PIP. 2. Leave the company in a week and get 3 months severance. 3. Retire NLT than 1 November. SURPRISE!!!!"

They had the same disgraceful, dishonest and shameful conversation w 2 of our other Highly-Productive Senior Sales Personnel in the Region.

You cant piss down my leg and tell me that it's raining. This was handled so pathetically. How about annhinest conversation about where the company is at due to COVID, plunging global demand, etc. Instead of taking rhebfunk.

Every other person on the team knows that this happened and is simultaneously happening around the country and globe. They're just waiting to be Zoomed in to the "you're headed to the gallows next" call.

There you go Disgusting Darren...

Why is morale at XOM the lowest in the industry?

"Here's your sign."

Adios!!

We tend to treat each other poorly. We treat partners poorly. We treat consultants and vendors poorly. We reward a passive aggressive culture reflecting being cut throat but cordial is the way it should be. I'm sad for us, and I hope we find a catalyst for change, because I used to believe we had the best and brightest not the most cunning.

Other companies lay off all the time, so their employees are numb about it.

It's really simple.
EM did hire the best and the brightest.
And they are the first to realize that Capitalist Socialism is a sick system.
The lower level intellects at Chevron, BP, Marathon, etc. - just slower to catch on.

When I first hired in many years ago I was amazed at how many 25+ year employees were counting their days to retirement. After putting in over 20 years now myself I now see why. What is most aggravating to me is the complete incompetency of "the best" out there when it comes to just the simple task of making money. When we have managers more concerned about how many questionable items you have on a LPO versus our inefficient, costly, and redundant methods of issuing permits for mechanical work (OPE anyone). Sprinkle in a dash of inclusion and it is very easy to see why morale has been on a steady decline for years. The company used to be more about promotions and making the individual look good. There was a tradition and sense of pride in accomplishing our tasks.

Most of the other companies are much more inoculated to layoffs, and the about face on culture, which was challenging enough on its own, happened right at the same time as a massive change in the rankings system, both in terms of nature and consequence.

This creates some pretty ugly whiplash for everyone.

OP and @ozs+17E84kCO said it well.

The company should have been honest to the 2000 U.S. employees recently separated, declared an involuntary layoff and paid a fair severance to them. Instead, in its usual arrogant and tone deaf way, it wanted to save a few bucks and manipulate public perception by saying “there is nothing to see here...just business as usual.” Employees know better.

The Chevrons pay severance in such workforce reduction situations and that accounts for the strongly negative reaction by those impacted in ExxonMobil and those not impacted yet.

The remaining employees know the Company may very well do it them in the future and that loyalty is a one way street with ExxonMobil. Our culture has been in decline for the last few years, but the actions taken in 2020 have been abysmal.

TBF, XOM was toxic prior to 2020. Canada did employee surveys a few years ago and LT was absolutely shocked that the peons are only here for the pay and nothing else. Think the consultants said the culture here is one of the worst they’ve seen.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Fake lay-offs of a lot of people who were not low performers. Finding out about the 401K cuts from the media before our own management. Telling us the 401K cuts were necessary to save the dividend when they’re a drop in the bucket. The slow, water boarding style drip of information about the impending layoffs (Seriously - do a CEO town hall just to say you’ll find out soon?). And now prefacing all of their emails about it with stuff like “In the interest of creating clarity.”

Nobody would be happy if we just plain announced layoffs this summer, but the multiple indignities of how management has handled this continues to add up and make it far worse than what it could have been. It’s hard to imagine this CLT ever getting the trust of rank and file employees back.

It feels to me like Dallas leadership is acting in a manner completely different than they have before, and they aren't owning their decisions. Makes people feel pretty jaded and upset

Hard not to be jaded after being kicked in the nuts so many times.

Once you lose your employees’ trust that leadership will act in accordance with the stated company values, it’s gone. First the way COVID was handled, then the PIPs of high performing people who challenged management, then the lack of transparency eroded employee trust.
