Thread regarding Neiman Marcus Group layoffs

New round of NM lay-off

In true Neiman’s spirit they laid off all the executive assistants today. They are making the roles hourly roles and offered to let them interview. People who have been loyal to the company and doing the job for years having to interview for their previous positions. Of course the new hourly positions will pay less then what they were making before. Just shows how much Neiman’s really cares about its people. They are cutting cost with people that really matter but keep big VP salary’s for VP that’s don’t do anything.

Admin Assts aren't necessarily the new whipping boy. I know this may be hard to hear but in every company, Admin Assts are considered a "nice to have" layer. When tough times hit, this layer (along with other "nice to have" layers will be trimmed during a cost cutting exercise. As a manager, you are told to pick people to cut and you are questioned as to if you really do need someone to do your scheduling, expense reports, bookings, misc things.

The board gets paid well enough for a failing company...The admin assistants were the new #whippingBoy. ..I saw on neiman Marcus s—s on Facebook that even their lenders are adding protections in bank documents...Bankruptcy is imminent ..its just a matter of when

The person who posted that NM had too many Admins is right. I wotked at NM Corporate. I saw that scenario. It is not that the individuals who are Admin are bad or worthless but it is very true that in today's business climate, Admin Assts are no longer required or assigned except to the very top C-suite. Most companies don't hire Admin Assts for their managers. They make them do their own travel bookings, expense reports, etc. etc. I've worked in so many companies where the Admin Asst has a lazy manager and one who is on an ego trip where the Admin Asst is their status symbol, i.e. "I have an Admin, you don't, so you're a lower caste than me." If you're an Admin Asst, you should try to protect yourself by adding skills so that you're more chopping-list proof. When a company goes through hard times, they'll cut the Admin Assts first. They see this layer as fluff.

Neiman’s is Done. This is a blessing for these people. They can get a severance, some unemployment and find someplace to work that isn’t a giant toxic sh– hole, with a possibility of moving up one day.

NM had many admin assts to execs who were not needed. Most companies do not give their execs (except those who are C-level) an admin. They make them schedule their own meetings, travels, file expense reports, etc. This is the modern era, you don't need someone doing it for you.

its a blessing in disguise...I supported the worst SVP... by default. But this just forces me to move on
and find something else...This will not define me or hold me down...I know MY worth..apparently a lesson that Management has never learned about the ones below who really make it happen. So just waiting to start seeing the bricks fall, one by one. So shameful.
