Someone has already mentioned it here, but I would like to emphasize it once more because it bothers me a lot. It is absolutely wrong that those who stay at work longer are considered good workers. There are exceptions but generally I think that's an outdated way of thinking about work. Recognition is given to those who stay longer whether they get something done or not, and recognition is denied to those who finish the job very quickly because they have the skills and because they are completely focused during that time.

It's an antiquated work culture. Pembina was the only company I have worked for in my entire career where if you weren't putting in 1-3 hours of overtime each day, taking your laptop home with you, working through lunches, you were looked at as not being a team player, and not putting team and company first. I stayed late when it was required of me, but otherwise always worked my 8.5 hrs a day, went home and lived my life, then came back the next day to do it all over again. I routinely heard the passive aggressive comments about me, and would see the funny and dirty looks walking out the door. Sorry for having a life, I suppose. And to me, if you have to genuinely put in all that extra UNPAID overtime, you have either taken on too much work, or you are not properly utilizing your time. If you are staying late solely for perception, and to try and get ahead, well, honestly the joke is on you. Totally bizarre.
The company really needs to look at it in a different way. If the person is staying late, it could be few reasons:
• bad organizational skills
• poor skill set
• pretending (showing up as "hardworking") to get recognized or looking for promotion
After all, if the person stays long, it means that there's something wrong with the work processes and it definitely needs to be improved and changed
I completely agree. Some people are not very efficient doing their work. Others are there, just wasting time, browsing in internet and showing themselves online after working hours. Management think those working late are more committed to the company. Wrong!!
