Splunk & AppD

Just wondering if anyone has heard how Splunk or AppD folks might be impacted with the upcoming RIF......there is a ton of overlap between the organizations and no one knows how the two orgs are supposed to fit together.

I've seen talk of Meraki, SBC, and TAC, but these two have been suspiciously quiet on this site.

I don't feel bad for AppD.
They had a lot of BS politics even prior to the Cisco acquisition.
Cisco paid too much for them.
Most of the top tier talent left the company within the following 12-24 months.
By 2018-2019 AppD was a shell of it's former self.

Well AppD might be safe if leadership actually has a goal to sell observability alongside what splunk does.

Otherwise it can basically be stripped off and sell it off as an unwanted limb. Sad if that happens tho.

They’ve already made its leadership a group of semi ambition yea men.

Is Cisco still trying to sell Thousand Eyes? That stuff was so expensive, and the licensing was complex even by Cisco standards. Guess it isn't the shiny new object anymore.

Splunk doesn’t directly sell Observability. They add it on to other SKUs. Splunk doesn’t really have Observability SEs, they have overlays, not direct sellers. There might be some overlap, but, on their own, Splunk doesn’t have the number of people needed to sell Observability at AppD volume. I don’t think it will be that bad. Maybe some management, maybe some reps. I don’t have any clue on the product side, but I imagine they’re pretty busy making one product out of two (I hope).
Also, it seems like Splunk is training up the AppD reps and SEs to sell the full Splunk catalog, not just Observability.

If I were an AppD guy and I wanted to stay at Cisco I’d be worried.

I feel bad for AppD. At the time of the acquisition it had real momentum. But it’s languished for so long that every other observability tool has outpaced it. Plenty of good people are going to get cut because senior leadership is inept.

Splunk will be safe for 2 to 4 years, depending on whether they continue to grow or not. AppD is now redundant so I expect good number of cuts there.

My understanding is splunk is safe for two years so it'd be the appd folks who are sol
