Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Global IT has shrunk even more (since RIFs have been happening pretty regularly since GM took over) What do you think will happen now?

With the new CIO, and leaving behind the core and periphery model, and also going away from Regions. So much is changing all over again. Will there be more RIFs? Is there any chances of growth or promotions ever in this company? It's not a good market outside either to just drop the job here and leave unless we are also RIFed?..

I am not sure what is the strategy looks now. from new CIO there is more momentum on shifting workforce to India. The old CIO tried to put some notorious strategy and this CIO tenure will be used to somehow fix those. This has been the trend in global IT for a while now without any leap forward. IBM to inhouse to bangalore to cognizant to hyderabad.

Maybe it was done sensibly this time, but the group was already worn thin after last year's brutal layoffs. These teams are going to have to prioritize because the headcount is way below the demand.

May be the number is more, but this time they picked up specific people in different teams and not the entire one or more team(s) which makes sense. I think the global IT cut was done sensibly even though a cut is never good for anyone

You think only 15-20 people in global IT got laid off? Get real.

This time Global IT was relatively untouched with layoff numbers are between 15 & 20. But who knows when would be the next one. The whole Core and Periphery is gone.

I am in IT Sr Mgmt leading bunch of stupid Project/Program. Confessing here - I have been moonlighting for last year and half; thought I’d get caught & dismissed, survived this time as well… I now know will survive even longer because I am the only one who knows all shiiit now. Hahhhhhaaaaa. Any KT efforts to Cognizant and I’ll decide/demand the terms & severance.

Unfortunately this is what happens when you have a CFO that knows nothing about IT she hires an Individual contributor who apparently claims she is a “technology first and a leader second “ no vision just running IT as a commodity “india first “ hard to understand how we can be the undisputed leader of med tech if we cut IT over and over again.

Look, “maybe Cognizant is the global IT” may not be a bad choice. In order to work for Cognizant , a person most likely has to be in the top 5% pool of Indian talent.

At Medtronic Global IT, we get the left over of IT talent from US talent pool, US top IT talent all went to Silicon Valley or Wall Street. We get second class IT talent from St Cloud state university. So why not trade with Indian top talent for 50% of the money?

To get my severance I was required to stick around and train in my Cognizant replacements. All my years of experience were condensed to a few hours of "knowledge transfers". As I was training them, even they were quitting, leaving for greener pastures in Bangalore.

For MDT Global IT, it's a race to last place!

Everything is a cycle. There will be promotions and growth again as the economy becomes better.
