February 28, 2023. The layoffs have started at Milford Proving Ground, and likely other locations too. Here's a local story: https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2023/02/28/gm-cuts-several-hundred-jobs-save-money-improve-performance/69954964007/

Yes, confirmed GM layoff is real and started from today based on performance reason and targeting all sections of people regardless of race and color.

A meeting occurred yesterday with contractors and they were told the layoffs are being discussed as well as talks of shuddering a few buildings in the Warren Tech Center. GM workers will be attending the "all peoples meeting" today and tomorrow. Too aggressive hiring the last few years from COVID losses and a big influx of Silicon Valley workers are most likely the cause, as well as swelling dealer inventories now that production is back on track.

2023 layoffs are already taking place via PIPs and performance improvement processes. GM is lying to shareholders!

Less than a week after GM makes major (shareholder reporting) announcements that there are not going to be any layoffs in 2023 we hear that hundred of hourly seniority workers at multiple plants are being laid off. What gives? I’ve been emailing the authors of each and every article—Barrons, PBS, Economist etc—telling them about the layoffs and asking them to follow up with reporting. I know righting letters and emails is a drag but it can be an effective way to focus attention on an important issue: In this case, GM lying to shareholders, or GM lying about the reasons for these recent layoffs (strategic contract year layoffs, or…?)

Contract year nonsense to try and "punish" hourly folks. Every time negotiations come up GM suddenly turns into a company just on the edge of keeping the doors open again.

Irresponsible speculation:
Not long after we return to the office in February (mabye a month or two), there will be a layoff.
This will of course spook most people.
Management will use this fear as leverage and tell their groups, "As we attempt to roll out mutiple EV programs in a timely fashion, GM needs to utilize all of it's resourcse. We need all hands on deck so we are transitioning to a full in-office week. We will make exceptions for doctor's appointments and snow days."
Also in their bag of tricks: Pay cuts and demanding salary work unpaid overtime.

This site actually bans you if you say anything positive about GM.

Some really nasty people here wishing harm on others. Careful what you wish for!
There's no reason to believe a layoff is coming, and anyone claiming there is one coming needs to put up or shut up.

"For sure the contractors will just disappear."
"You'll just see people called to conference rooms by their managers."
"You won't hear anything until the formal announcement."

All bullsh1t.
High profits in 2022, no negative data whatsoever. There's even a high probability we will see a really nice bonus.

For sure the contractors will just disappear. That's what GM pays them for, to be expendable.

Might not be an announcement.

You'll just see people called to conference rooms by their managers.

Or just disappear

Really starting to think that bots are posting things here. The same question was posted here a couple days ago.
Here's a quick answer: No one at GM has heard anything about layoffs in 2023 and there's no news. I hope that clears things up! Yikes...
