Doesn't matter, at GM you either helping the cr---y culture or a victim of it.
The impression I got was that GM wants to be better than most large companies.
GM, like most large companies, has a tendency to underpay a number of people. They also try to find every excuse not to give a pay raise. Typically after year 1 of employment you will see a full 3% raise and a bonus based on the months you were there (ie if you were hired in March you'll only see the bonus based on 9 of 12 months or 75%).
In general ask for you money up front. The best thing to do is jump around internally and externally. Also ask for the raise. Most managers are only there for themselves and never will be there for the people under them. Working at a large civilian company is not like an infantry company commander living and working in war zone. In the case of GM, if you were hired prior to the pension cutoff (1994), these old timers are just riding the wave. Winter 2018-2019 layoff was meant to fix this issue however, if you know someone you'll be ok. Just look at most US government employees.
Key thought: to be a good leader get to know the people that work under you.

Always have an exit. The book, 'What Color is your Parachute' kinda helps to have a career plan and ask yourself questions you might not have thought of.
MY2028 will be the break point of EVs. GM is either going:
option a:
to sell these machines and it will result in the bean counters dismissing engine system, fuel system, and powertrain employees
or
option b:
to travel Capital Hill and request a loan
Being an MS grad does not guarantee a higher salary. So you are a senior engineer (7B) with just 4 years of experience? Damn you must be one he-l of a performer or have friends in high places. Or maybe both
Hired in in 2017 out of college as a 5A at 67k, now at $111k salary as a 7b. I am a recent MS grad too though.
If you're still sitting at 6B after 5 years, then it's time to move around or at least update your skill set.
I had a similar salary to OP. After four years of long hours and hard work I was making about 14% more than I started at. After I got laid off I took a job for 12% more before the checks stopped coming from GM. Three years after the layoff I'm making 75% more than what I was making at General Motors and GM is desperately trying to find people to do what I do.
Same as you
100k+, no degree.
Former instructor for many dozens of people, and expert in what I do. Handful of patents, and many dozen recommended letters of endorsement from co-workers.
Pieces of paper are always the barrier for corporations, as if the s**t means anything. It has zero reflection upon talent or ability, yet HR, the most useless within the corporation, remains that barrier. Find a way around it, and them.
It's not like they're intellectually capable of figuring out you gamed their system. They simply check mark boxes.
