B&N: A Long History of Very Bad Decisions

I recently visited my old Barnes & Noble and things are looking pretty desperate. I remember during the furloughs the managers said there were certain people they would never ask to come back. But there they were, yacking on the floor doing nothing as usual, while the people who did the most work got canned. I can't think of many good decisions this pitiful company has made.
It's sick how the useless managers will probably go down with the ship with severances.

"he is closeted in the office with the asst mgr."

Really? What are they doing in there?

My store specializes in hiring people who were fired from Target. Most of them are rude to customers. The manager doesn't care because he is closeted in the office with the asst mgr. Half the store is cheap toys and cheap gift c-ap.

@2cwf Love it. Way to stand up for yourself and not be pushed around. There need to be more people like you.

“ you’ll never work for Barnes and Noble again”
I told him “ after Christmas, neither will you.” And hung up !

Good for you ! BN wouldn’t show ( and hasn’t , in the past) you the same courtesy.

I would say the company really became unbearable around the mid-2000s.

Things really went south around 2008, along with the economy. A slew of good managers were fired and replaced with worse ones. Then, the introduction of the NOOK made everyone's life miserable. Let's not forget all the threats management made if you didn't force customers to buy that ripoff member card and the famous hacked credit card! This is when we learned not to trust the district manager who told our store manager to let leads fight it out for positions. And believe it or not, this horrible, useless woman got a promotion as Regional Manager.

I pity everyone who is still there working for the worst managers ever.

Congratulations on your new job! I'm sure you'll be much happier in a better atmosphere where they appreciate you.

Be sure to write a employee review on Indeed and the other job sites and tell everyone on Facebook about your experiences with B&N, Corporate loves that!

I got another job !
Found out last night. Told them I can start immediately! ( didn’t want to lose out)
Called manager this morning, said I’m done.
“ what about 2 weeks?”
BN hasn’t given employees 2 weeks.
“ you’ll never work for Barnes and Noble again”
I told him “ after Christmas, neither will you.” And hung up !

Our manager said he’s looking elsewhere. After the holidays we’ll likely close. That’s not like him. He knows we are and probably can’t tell us yet.

Guy I worked with just had his store close down. They were telling booksellers to dust because they didn't have enough maintenance people. LOL.

Barnes and Noble is like an army that knows the war is over, but the id–t generals in charge don't want to admit it yet.

For years BN hasn’t cared about the quality of employees. Filling full time positions with part timers to save a buck. The stores suffered for it and the customer took notice. A well run operation became pieced together with minimum wage minimally interested people.

"But don't expect them to pick up a broom anytime soon!"

Why should they? That's what the "bookseller" is for!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha Beware or they'll sprinkle you with dust!!!!

As far as I know, yes, the witches are still buzzing around. But don't expect them to pick up a broom anytime soon!

Hey does anyone know if those witches in New England are still flying around? Or did any of them get canned?

Someone just told me about this site. I am not shocked reading these posts. I've only been with the company for a short time but you can bet I'm looking for something better. I feel bad for the employees who got laid off after years of dedication.

Lots of bad decisions. They keep horrible Mgrs ( TN) and bad DMs...
It’s like they don’t want to succeed. Keeping Uninvested part timers who could care less about the place. And firing/ laying off/ whatever way they try to spin it, dedicated, knowledge people. The customers notice the lackluster employees they keep.
The company deserves what they get.

Consistent, quality work goes unnoticed. Kissing management’s azzes & feeding their very needy egos is what keeps one in a job at BN.

I wasn’t known to be an azz kisser, so I was largely ignored. Those who were suk ups are, most likely, still working, but not me. 20 years of dedication to my job—up in smoke.

This happened in 2018 too, when BN canned the most knowledgeable staff members.

They just can’t seem to stop shooting themselves with bad decisions.
