Thread regarding VMware layoffs

My anxiety levels are through the roof

This whole layoff and acquisition thing has me on edge. I've been having trouble sleeping lately, and it's really starting to affect both my mood and my productivity. I feel like I can't concentrate anymore, and it's frustrating considering that I'm working on a project that really needs my attention. I wish they would get it over with.

If you are this concerned, you are very likely part of the fluff we need to reduce. Look elsewhere and move on.

You probably should find a new job. It's not worth your health. Things are going to get tougher before they get easier.

I'm not saying (guessing) that our jobs are safe over the long-term. I'm saying that between now and October (or whenever the merger happens), I don't see any incentive to do a big layoff. After the merger? Yes, a bloodbath is coming. But by October, the recession might be done and finding a new job might be easier (plus, you'll have a severance). Feel free to look for jobs now, but if you can't find one, then I don't think it's so hopeless to lose sleep over!

You can accuse me of "smoking something," but my guess is as good as yours. You are looking at long-term issues with VMware, and I'm looking at February thru October, 2023.

"Honestly, I believe that our jobs are safer than the rest of the industry right now. Everyone is doing layoffs now, due to the recession. But we/vmware aren't reporting earnings to wall street (due to merger) and so what incentive do we have to make our numbers look "good" right now? By the time the merger happens, we'll be pulling out of the recession by then, and jobs will be easier to find."

Sure, keep smoking that hopeium, and pass it round the circle to the others who are upvoting your cope-filled post.

How can our jobs possibly be safer than the rest of the industry? What facts to you have to support that statement, apart from "we don't report earnings," which is a non-reason.

Let's look at the facts: VMW has been a monopoly for most of its history. It has only grown through acquisition. Acquired companies were just tossed into the mix, or given their own BU, resulting in a siloed organization, with no coherent technology story, apart from "Hey! Now we are multi-cloud!" - said by Kit in his colorful shoes and t-shirts. (Dude is stuck in the '00s, but that's beside the point.)

The entire technology that drives the industry has shifted from virtual machines to the cloud. VMW has not kept the pace. NO ONE wanted the CEO chair after Pat G. left, b/c NO ONE wanted to deal with Michael Dell - not worth it. So we get Mr. Magoo trying desperately to hold it all together long enough for the Broadcom acquisition to clear all the regulatory hurdles.

Meanwhile, SeNioR LeAdErSHiP at VMW is jumping ship at a record pace, rather than stick around for the bloodbath. Only people left are those collecting a paycheck and riding the wave as long as they can - hey, that's a fine strategy, and I do not blame anyone who stays and rides it out - get on with your bad selves.

Let's review: Product = cr-p. Org structure = cr-p. Management = cr-p. Markets = moved a looooong time ago. Dell needs to unload, and finds Broadcom - the PE firm doing business as a chip manufacturer - to take the deal. Someone else here said look at what is happening to Citrix, and that is more or less a blueprint for what to expect at VMW.

Don't cry about it or deny it or chase your cope-filled dreams. Admit to reality and decide your plan of action.

Tech layoff is everywhere recently and layoff is coming at VMware. We can only do what we can do. Let's prepare ourselves emotionally, financially and more important technically competent. Let's encourage and share information with each other. Hope we all come out stronger and happier.

VMware owes you nothing. If your current workplace is bad for your mental health then you need to leave. No company is worth any level of anxiety.

Just my opinion.

you still have a job, your still busy, if not make yourself busy, don't get distracted worrying about what might happen, as a software veteran i have seen these recessions and consolidations 3-4 times before, could go in any direction, just ride it out and if worse comes to the worse there's a payoff and you'll pick up other work, don't get too worked up, its just not worth it

Unfortunately, it's gonna be a while till this thing closes. In the meantime, control what you can control. Collect your paycheck and search for jobs while you're still employed.

We are months away from the conclusion. Maybe start thinking of quitting, for your sanity if nothing else.

You can only control your own activity. Focus exclusively on that.
